Smile Makeover Treatment: Reinvent Your Smile

Dental Bonding

A smile makeover involves one or more dental restorative and cosmetic treatments to improve the appearance of your smile. You may choose to undergo a smile makeover for many reasons, with treatments customized to your needs. These can include teeth whitening, dental bonding, dental implants, gum contouring, and dental veneers.

At Scott J Owens DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we provide a comprehensive smile makeover treatment. At your consultation, Dr. Owens will ask what you like or dislike about your smile. For example, you might be unhappy with gaps in your smile, amalgam fillings, and tooth color. Dr. Owens will also consider your skin tone, hair color, the size, width, color, and length of your teeth, and your gum tissue and lips, before making any recommendations on how to enhance your smile.

Smile Makeover Options

There are many reasons for someone to seek a smile makeover. Tooth decay, cracks, chips, stains, cavities, and other issues can develop over time and impact the look of your natural teeth. In some cases, people are born with discolored or misshapen teeth, which can negatively impact their confidence, and dental issues like a missing tooth may affect the function of your teeth and gums.

Some of the most common reasons people opt for a smile makeover treatment include:

Large Teeth (Macrodontia)

The size and shape of natural teeth vary for everyone. While some people may feel their teeth are overly large, they are rarely abnormally big. Teeth may appear larger than they are due to a small jaw or receding gums. However, in some cases, people can have teeth that are over two standard deviations bigger than average. This condition is known as macrodontia.

The leading cause of macrodontia is genetic conditions, such as insulin-resistant diabetes, hemifacial hyperplasia, and KBG syndrome. Other developmental issues that can contribute to this condition include childhood diet or exposure to certain materials, gender (macrodontia is more prominent among males), and hormone imbalances.

At Scott J Owens DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we can use a variety of cosmetic dental treatments to combat long teeth, such as tooth recontouring, where your dentist shaves away some tooth enamel, so the tooth doesn’t look as large. This non-invasive procedure should only be performed on healthy teeth. We may also refer you for orthodontic treatment.

Medication-Induced Stains

Although they are often necessary, certain types of medication can pose the risk of tooth discoloration and deep dental stains (intrinsic and extrinsic), particularly in developing children. Tetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of infections, but it can also impact the formation of enamel in young children. Common antihistamines, such as Benadryl, may also cause tooth discoloration.

Through our smile makeover service, you can choose from several cosmetic procedures to address medication-induced stains. Some of the most popular solutions include professional teeth whitening, dental crowns, and dental veneers.

Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can detract from your youthful appearance and negatively impact the look of your smile. Not only can missing teeth affect your confidence and self-esteem, but they can also limit your oral function and can even affect your speech. Patients with missing teeth are also more vulnerable to tooth decay and infection.

Common causes of missing teeth include tooth decay, poor oral health, gum disease, and accidents or injuries. In some cases, people experience congenitally missing teeth, also known as hypodontia. Dr. Owens can use restorative and cosmetic dental treatments like a dental bridge, dentures, or dental implants to restore your smile.

Small Teeth and a Gummy Smile (Microdontia)

Having smaller than average teeth is a condition known as microdontia. This often causes people to have prominent gums, which can make them self-conscious about smiling. Microdontia in all of your teeth is rare, but it is quite common in one or two of them. This means that treatment methods vary depending on the extent of the condition.

For isolated teeth affected by microdontia, porcelain veneers or dental bonding are an effective treatment. A gum contouring treatment enables our dental team to trim away excess gum tissue if it is more severe. This can be combined with another procedure like dental veneers or lumineers to give you a big, beautiful smile.

Gaps and Bite Issues

Tooth gaps and bite issues (overbites, underbites, and crossbites) are frequently caused by a temporomandibular disorder (TMJ). This problem causes the temporomandibular joint to become inflamed, causing discomfort, teeth grinding, chipping, and jaw locking.

We can install a TMJ mouth splint or complete a full mouth reconstruction treatment to treat this disorder and create the perfect smile. We may also refer you for orthodontic treatment to help realign your bite and eliminate gaps in your smile.

Popular Smile Makeover Treatments

Depending on your smile goals, budget, and oral health, we can recommend specific treatments for the best outcome. Scott J Owens DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry offers several key services to help create your dream smile, from restorative procedures to treatment for various cosmetic issues. We welcome you to book an appointment for an evaluation and to discuss your dream smile.

Our most popular smile makeover treatments include:

Teeth Whitening

Food, beverages, smoking, medication, and other factors can contribute to stained teeth. If your teeth are discolored or stained but have no structural damage or decay, professional teeth whitening can help restore your pearly whites in just one hour. We offer two types of professional whitening treatments at Scott J Owens DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry: an in-chair option and a take-home whitening solution.

Zoom Whitening treatment is a color restoration process that takes place at our dental practice. It is best for individuals with mild to moderate stains. This in-office treatment is carried out by our dental team and takes approximately 60 minutes. You can expect to improve the color of your teeth up to eight shades, which provides a tremendous boost to your self-confidence in just one visit.

If you don’t have time for an in-chair whitening appointment, you can use our convenient at-home whitening kits. These feature professional-grade whitening gels and are custom designed to minimize irritation and sensitivity. You’ll still achieve incredible results, but it can take up to 14 days to see the full whitening effect.

Porcelain Dental Veneers and LUMINEERS

Our porcelain dental veneers are light materials bonded to the front surface of your teeth to enhance their appearance. Veneers are an excellent option for someone suffering from microdontia, crooked, chipped, discolored, or worn teeth. Dental veneers can mask several flaws simultaneously.

The procedure begins with a complimentary consultation with Dr. Owens, where you can discuss your needs and ask any questions. He examines your teeth, takes impressions and X-rays before determining what approach works best. Dr. Owens fits temporary veneers until your permanent ones are ready.

LUMINEERS are a cost-effective alternative to porcelain material veneers. One of the main benefits of this treatment is that it doesn’t require tooth shaving or other preparation. LUMINEERS are extremely thin and can be applied over teeth, crowns, or bridgework.

Dental Crowns

Fitting dental crowns can effectively combat severe dental issues, such as decayed, fractured, or cracked teeth. Our ceramic porcelain crowns are essentially caps placed over an existing tooth or teeth to enhance your smile and protect your teeth from further decay. We don’t apply a one-size-fits-all approach to our dental crowns. Each one is custom-designed to fit your smile.

This versatile restoration is ideal for restoring worn, misshaped, or intrinsically stained teeth.

The entire process involves just two visits, and you can expect to show off your natural-looking and long-lasting crowns in as little as two weeks after your initial visit.

Dental Bridges

If you’re missing teeth, we can replace them with dental bridges to rejuvenate your smile and boost your confidence. These are made from safe, tooth-colored materials and hold a replacement tooth (a pontic) and a crown on either side, using the natural teeth as supports for the fake tooth. These are often needed if you suffer from severe periodontal disease, meaning your gums cannot support dental implants.

Dental bridges are fitted in two stages. The first step involves cleaning and treating the neighboring teeth for the abutments. Impressions of the mouth, gum line, and jawbone are taken to create a personalized custom bridge. The second step occurs around two weeks later, where we fit the bridge.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are another great solution for patients with severely decayed or missing teeth. Implants are fitted using three main parts: titanium posts, metal balls, and rubber O-rings. The titanium posts are embedded in the jawbone during dental implant surgery. A false tooth is then attached to the metal ball component, and the O-ring creates a cushion between the tooth and the gum. Depending on y our oral and overall health, the dental implant process can take about nine months.

Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth and the only option that restores your jawbone health. They function like natural teeth, so your normal hygiene routine should keep them in good condition.

Tips for Smile Makeover Aftercare

After receiving treatment, people often have dental concerns about maintaining their smiles. Dr. Owens will give you professional advice on the best way to maintain your teeth after your specific procedure. In addition to this, some other aftercare tips include:

  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush twice daily
  • Ensure you brush properly by being gentle and using a circular motion
  • Brush your tongue
  • Floss daily
  • Avoid consuming sugary and sticky drinks
  • Stay away from hard, chewy, and sugary foods (e.g., toffee, hard candy, and beef jerky)
  • Avoid acidic foods and drinks (coffee, tea, and red wine are acidic and stain your teeth)
