What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of tooth-colored materials. They are custom-designed and bonded to the front area of the teeth. As these shells are bonded to the teeth, they will help to conceal any flaws by changing your teeth’s color, shape, size or length. They also help to correct dental issues such as uneven tooth alignment, chips, cracks and more.

With porcelain veneers, unlike with crowns, you would need little-to-no removal of tooth structure.

Porcelain veneers are a relatively simple way to solve most or even all of your cosmetic dental issues and helping you achieve the smile of your dreams.

Benefits of porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are known to solve a multitude of cosmetic dental issues. Some more common examples of cosmetic dental issues that porcelain veneers can fix include:

Worn teeth: Due to the consumption of sugary drinks, coffee and the use of certain medications, teeth can become worn or dull naturally. Porcelain veneers can help add length to teeth that are affected by worn enamel.

Wear and tear: As we age, our teeth start to wear down resulting in a higher likelihood of chips and cracks. Veneers can help to conceal these chips and other imperfections to restore your smile.

Discoloration: While some may use teeth whitening substances to get rid of discoloration, it may not be 100% effective. Since veneers are tooth-colored, they can cover the discoloration while seamlessly blending in with your teeth.

Crooked teeth: Veneers can be attached to the surfaces of the teeth allowing them to look perfectly aligned. A simple solution in comparison to having to wear braces for an extended period of time.

The veneers procedure

To start off, you will have a complimentary consultation with Dr. Owens to discuss what you would like to achieve. He will examine your teeth to ensure that dental veneers are suitable for you and review what the steps involved in implementing the procedure. Impressions of your teeth and an X-ray may also be taken.

On your next visit, we will need a tooth sample to design the veneers. We will remove a small portion of the enamel from the tooth surface. Before trimming the enamel, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area.

We either make a model or take an impression of your tooth to help with constructing your veneers.

While the veneers are being made, we provide you with temporary veneers to wear.

Once your veneers are ready, we use a type of very strong cement to bond them to your teeth. A light beam will also be applied to the veneer so that the cement hardens rapidly.

We remove any excess cement, evaluate your bite and make any necessary final adjustments.

You may need to return for a follow-up visit to check on placement and see if your gums are responding well to the veneers.

After the veneers procedure

After the procedure, you may experience some sensitivity in your teeth which will fade within two weeks. While porcelain veneers are very durable and can last a number of years, it is important to not grind or bite down on hard foods such as ice or nuts. Proper oral hygiene such as brushing your teeth, flossing and dental check-ups are imperative in maintaining your veneers.

If you prefer, we also provide LUMINEERS. The main difference between LUMINEERS and porcelain veneers are that they require no grinding or shaving of the tooth. LUMINEERS are extremely thin and can even be placed over existing crown or bridgework. They are a painless, permanent solution in improving your smile.
