What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of tooth-colored porcelain material bonded directly onto the front of your teeth. These custom-designed shells can address a range of dental issues such as discolored teeth, misshapen teeth, misaligned teeth, minor gaps between teeth, and even broken teeth. Veneers also help those whose natural tooth enamel has eroded achieve an attractive smile.
Unlike dental crowns, which cover the entire tooth, porcelain veneers require little-to-no removal of tooth structure and are an excellent choice for those with minor teeth imperfections and minimal damage to their teeth. Those with more extensive tooth decay may require a root canal or other dental treatment options to address their oral health before veneers can be added.
Porcelain veneers are an optimal option for people looking for a dental treatment that offers cosmetic improvement to flawed teeth with minimum dental visits. Once attached, veneers can last at least ten years or longer.
Benefits of porcelain veneers
Porcelain dental veneers can solve a multitude of cosmetic dental issues. Some more common examples of cosmetic dental issues that porcelain veneers can fix include:
Worn teeth
Sugary foods and drinks, teeth grinding, and certain medications can cause teeth to become worn or dull over time. Porcelain veneers can help add length to teeth affected by worn enamel.
Wear and tear
As we age, our teeth start to wear down, resulting in a higher likelihood of chips and cracks. Veneers can help conceal these chips and other imperfections to restore your smile.
Discoloration
While professional teeth whitening can remove most extrinsic discoloration, it may not be 100% effective for stains due to medications, trauma, or illness. Since veneers are tooth-colored, they can cover the discoloration while seamlessly blending in with your teeth.
Crooked teeth
Traditional veneers can be attached to the surfaces of the teeth allowing them to look perfectly aligned. Veneers are a simple solution for minor misalignment of your front six social teeth, allowing you to avoid wearing braces for an extended period.

The veneers procedure
Your initial appointment includes a complimentary consultation with Dr. Owens to discuss your eligibility for veneers and what you would like to achieve. He examines your teeth to ensure that veneers are the right cosmetic treatment for you and then review the steps involved in implementing the procedure. Dr. Owens may also take impressions of your teeth and an X-ray.
On your next visit, Dr. Owens removes a small portion of the enamel from the tooth surface, approximately 0.5 mm. Before trimming the enamel, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area. We take an impression and make a model of your tooth to help with constructing your veneers.
While the veneers are being fabricated, we provide you with temporary veneers to wear.
Once your veneers are ready, we use a type of very strong cement to bond them to your teeth. A light beam is also applied to the veneer, so the cement hardens quickly. We then remove any excess cement, evaluate your bite, and make the necessary final adjustments.
You may need to return for a follow-up visit to check on placement and see if your gums are responding well to the veneers.
After the veneers procedure
After the procedure, you may experience some tooth sensitivity which generally subsides within two weeks. While porcelain veneers are durable and can last several years, it is essential not to grind or bite down on hard foods such as ice or nuts.
Proper oral hygiene, such as brushing your teeth, flossing, and dental check-ups, are important in maintaining your dental veneers. With proper care, your veneers can keep you smiling bright for longer.
What Are LUMINEERS?
At Scott J Owens DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we also provide LUMINEERS. Like traditional veneers, LUMINEERS can correct discoloration, assist in reshaping the teeth, and address other cosmetic imperfections that are keeping you from your ideal smile.
LUMINEERS are extremely thin and are a bit more translucent than traditional veneers, making them a good option for those with severe tooth discoloration hoping for a whiter smile. LUMINEERS can also be placed over an existing crown or bridgework. The LUMINEER procedure requires no enamel grinding or tooth preparation before adhesion.
Traditional veneers and LUMINEERS are both permanent and designed to remain in place for decades.
