Using Veneers to Improve Your Smile

Emily Harrison Porcelain Veneers & LUMINEERS

Veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic, porcelain or composite resin material, which are bonded to the front of your teeth. At Scott J Owens DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we can perform this procedure with little or no anesthesia at all. It can be the perfect choice for improving the appearance of your front teeth. Veneers are also placed to mask discolorations, to brighten teeth and improve a smile.

Why Veneers?
They are probably the best alternative to crowns in many circumstances. They afford you a much more conventional approach to changing the color, size or shape of your teeth. Veneers can hide unattractive imperfections, such as teeth that have been stained by smoking, food, medicine or even damaged due to an injury or as a result of a root-canal procedure. They are perfect for masking discolored fillings in front teeth.

If you happen to have a gap between your front teeth or your teeth are chipped or worn, then you may want to consider veneers. Generally, they will last for many years, and the technique has shown remarkable longevity when properly performed.

Enhancing Your Smile
Porcelain laminate veneers are among the most aesthetic means of creating a more pleasing and beautiful smile. At Scott J Owens DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we use a shade guide to determine the best veneer color for our patients’ teeth. Once placed, your veneers will be extremely strong and will resist most of the forces placed on them by you. Porcelain is a glass and just like glass it is very strong, but brittle. Therefore, you should avoid anything that will tend to stress the laminate veneer. As with many things, common sense should prevail.

Longevity
You may be wondering exactly how long your porcelain veneers will last? Well, the good news is that they can last from 10 to 20 years. While the veneer itself is lifeless, the tooth or teeth to which they are attached and the surrounding gum tissues are living and may change. For example, gum line shrinkage may expose or reveal root surfaces. If a veneer comes off it can generally be bonded again. If it chips it can be replaced.
