Which cases require a root canal?
The tooth is made of dentin, covered by enamel above the gingiva and cementum below it. The dentin plays the role of a cell for the pulp, which supplies the tissues with vital ingredients like nutrients, blood, and oxygen.
Poor oral hygiene, along with other factors, can lead to the accumulation of plaque. This is a breeding ground for bacteria, which produce harmful substances, which damage the tooth structure.
Once bacteria create a stable environment near the tooth, they begin multiplying and producing pathogenic substances. This causes the tooth structures to dissolve and turn into decay. As they make their descent through the different structures, they reach the pulp and the canals it is situated in. The result is inflammation of the pulp (pulpitis), and it has to be removed. Since bacteria is still present, the canals have to be cleaned. This done with a root canal treatment.
Why should you get a root canal?
If left untreated, the pain caused by this condition will only worsen. As the disease progresses, it can lead to bad breath, pus secretion and tooth extraction. Root canal therapy is a common dental procedure. It is minimally invasive and is performed to eliminate discomfort and save your tooth.
