Save or Remove?
Because tooth removal is an irreversible process, we consider all the options before we proceed with the extraction. In general, extractions are necessary when the damage to the tooth in question is too severe or extensive to repair. An accident or extensive decay can destroy a tooth to such a degree that filling it or replacing it with a crown becomes impractical. If an abscessed tooth doesn’t respond to root canal treatment, it may also become a candidate for extraction.
There are other conditions other than damage that can make extraction the most viable option. Periodontal disease can weaken the bone anchoring the tooth. When this happens, extraction can help prevent more extensive damage. Excessive crowding and pain, which are especially true for wisdom teeth, can also call for removal.
Painless Tooth Extractions
At Owens Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we can make the process a pain-free experience.
For standard extractions, we use local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. The numbness is somewhat uncomfortable, but the pain you feel becomes so dull, you might not even notice it at all.
If, however, you do not respond well to local anesthesia or if the type of procedure we perform might cause much more pain, we can also place you under sedation. We offer nitrous oxide sedation, which doesn’t require an injection, has no risk of overdose, and doesn’t cause nausea or fatigue.
