Tooth Removal Surgery

in Birmingham, MI

Tooth removal, also referred to as tooth extraction becomes necessary when your dentist cannot save a tooth with other dental techniques. This can be because the tooth has decayed to a point where it cannot be repaired, or the patient has experienced dental trauma. In some cases of periodontal disease, the teeth can become loose and will need to be removed.

What to expect when you are having a tooth removed

Having a tooth removed may be daunting to some people, but at Dr. Scott J. Owens DDS we will ensure the process is straightforward and as comfortable as possible.

A topical anesthetic will be applied before injecting a local anesthetic around the affected tooth. This area will become numb, and you will not experience any pain. However, you may still experience mechanical pressure while your dentist removes the tooth.

We can place you under sedation, using nitrous oxide if you are unresponsive to local anesthesia or you are anxious about the procedure.

After your tooth has been removed your dentist will evaluate the bone and gum area, and you may need a stitch or two to close the opening in the gum.

What to do after your tooth has been removed

It is important to keep the extraction site clean after your tooth has been removed. This will reduce the risk of infection.

Try not to do anything to agitate the area for at least 24 hours. This includes smoking, brushing teeth or constantly touching the site with your tongue. A gentle rinse with salt water is recommended but avoid swilling liquid vigorously in your mouth.

What are your options to restore your smile?

As soon as the extraction site has healed, your dentist will discuss various options available to replace your missing tooth. Dental implants, bridges, and dentures are all restoration options to consider to bring back your confident smile.

It is stressful to have a tooth removed, but your dentist will never suggest this procedure unless it is the correct course of action for you and your overall oral health.
