Teeth Straightening Options
in Birmingham, MI
If you have crooked teeth or they have large gaps between them, you may feel self-conscious about smiling in front of people at work or in social situations.
Many people also have conditions like an overbite, underbite, or crossbite, which can all negatively impact the functionality of their teeth and cause uncomfortable complications like temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ. The answer to every one of these aesthetic and functional issues is a visit to a skilled orthodontist.
There is a range of teeth straightening options available to correct misalignments, relieving discomfort and self-consciousness. There are also many other potential benefits like more aesthetically pleasing facial features, solving speech impediments, and eliminating difficulties with chewing.

Correcting orthodontic issues
The first step is to pay a visit to your dentist. They will perform a thorough assessment of your teeth and jaw, including an x-ray, to assess the extent of the problem and recommend an appropriate treatment. Options include:
- Traditional metal braces — The most affordable but also the most visible orthodontic treatment system. Your dentist will bond metal brackets onto the front surface of your teeth and link them with metal wires. Over time, the dentist will tighten these wires, gradually pulling your teeth into the desired position.
- Ceramic braces — These work in the same way as traditional metal braces, but the light-colored ceramic material is far less noticeable against your teeth. Light-colored wires are also available to make your ceramic braces even less visible.
- Lingual braces — These braces bond to the rear surface of your teeth, as opposed to the front. Lingual braces are one of the most discreet orthodontic treatment systems available.
- Invisalign™ — The most convenient option on this list, Invisalign™ utilizes a set of ultra-discreet, custom-made, and removable clear plastic aligners. Patients wear each aligner for 20-22 hours a day for two weeks, taking them out to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Once two weeks has passed, the patient switches to the next aligner in the set to continue the process.
Each of these teeth straightening options differs in terms of features, benefits, and cost, but all of them are highly effective at treating a range of orthodontic issues.
To help you decide which one is best for you, speak to your dentist. They will formulate a bespoke treatment plan for you and make a recommendation that can help you achieve your desired results within your budget.
