Teeth Straightening Options

A warm smile is often what people form first impressions from, but crooked teeth can make us self-conscious and keep up from smiling. The thought of braces, particularly as an adult, can strike a chord of fear because when we think of braces, we usually picture a mouthful of metal wires. But orthodontics has come a long way since the days of clunky headgear and painful metal. Today there are numerous teeth straightening options to choose from.

Clear Aligners: Aligners such as Invisalign work virtually the same way as traditional metal braces, but because they’re made of a clear material, they’re almost unnoticeable. Clear aligners can sometimes take a bit longer for full alignment to occur, but patients like them because they’re more comfortable than wire braces and can be removed for eating and brushing.

Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are metal braces that are placed out-of-sight behind the teeth. They can take longer to become accustomed to than traditional braces because of their proximity to the tongue. But patients sometimes prefer them because they’re undetectable.

Clear Ceramic Braces: Clear ceramic or tooth-colored braces are another virtually invisible alternative. They resemble a retainer, with silver wire, but the brackets and ligatures are either clear or tooth-colored. One drawback to ceramic braces is they can stain from foods such as coffee or curry but can easily be replaced.

Traditional Braces: The most common braces are still traditional braces which have improved significantly in recent years. They are made of high-grade stainless steel with metal brackets, and so are lighter in structure and weight. The braces are attached to each tooth with a type of cement, and then a thin wire links the brackets, putting gentle pressure on the teeth to align them correctly.
