Root Canal Treatment
in Beverly Hills, MI
If the surface of a tooth becomes compromised, perhaps through advanced decay or a traumatic injury, bacteria may enter the tooth and cause a dental pulp infection. This kind of infection can cause significant discomfort and could lead to a painful abscess. If left untreated, the tooth may need to be extracted.

What causes a dental pulp infection?
The most common cause of a pulp infection is untreated tooth decay. As the enamel softens and begins to break down, bacteria can penetrate the surface of the tooth and infect the soft tissue at the center. Dental pulp contains the nerves of the tooth, so an infection can cause discomfort.
Alternatively, if you have experienced a traumatic injury to your tooth that has exposed the dental pulp, your dentist will likely recommend a root canal treatment as a preventative measure to prevent an infection from occurring.
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is an endodontic treatment that involves the removal of the dental pulp. First, your dentist will conduct an x-ray to examine the shape and size of the root canals and check for infection in the surrounding area.
Then your dentist will numb the area and remove the pulp from the root canal using a small file. Once your dentist has removed the pulp, they will seal the root canals with a special filling material and either fill the damaged section of the tooth or fit a dental crown to prevent any further damage and restore the tooth’s structure.
Is root canal treatment painful?
A root canal treatment is typically performed under a local anesthetic. It may have a reputation for being more uncomfortable than other restorative treatments but, thanks to the introduction of advanced equipment and techniques, having root canal treatment shouldn’t be any more uncomfortable than a standard filling.
Like many other dental issues, maintaining a high standard of oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly can help to prevent an infection. Get the dental care you need at Dr. Scott J. Owens DDS by calling us today at 248-600-4521 for an appointment.
