Root Canal Treatment

in Beverly Hills, MI

If you are experiencing severe toothache, you may have an infection of the pulp at the center of your tooth. A pulp infection is a serious condition that, if left untreated, could cause you to develop a painful abscess or lose your tooth completely.

What causes a dental pulp infection?

Dental pulp can become infected if bacteria is able to penetrate the surface of a tooth. A tooth’s structure may become compromised through significant decay or a traumatic injury, exposing the pulp and increasing the risk of infection.

What to expect when having root canal treatment?

If you have a dental pulp infection, your dentist will need to remove the tissue to save the tooth. First, they will conduct a thorough examination of the infection site. They will also take an x-ray to assess the extent of the damage to the tooth and the surrounding tissue and view the shape and size of the root canals.

Then, under a local anesthetic, your dentist will use a tiny file to remove the dental pulp from the root canals, clearing away the infection.

They will then fill the canals with a sealant material before fitting a crown to protect the tooth from further infection or damage. In some cases, your dentist may seal the tooth and fit a crown at a second appointment to ensure the infection is completely gone.

A common misconception among dental patients is that a root canal treatment is painful and unpleasant, but most root canal patients tell us that the process is no more uncomfortable than a regular cavity filling.
