Reasons you may need root canal therapy
You may need a root canal if:
- A tooth is severely decayed or cracked
- A tooth is overly sensitive
- You have an infected tooth that’s resulted in an abscess
Root canal procedure
Your dentist will begin by taking a series of x-rays of the tooth. This gives the dentist a picture of the root structure of the tooth and severity of the infection in the tooth or surrounding bones.
Local anesthesia is used to numb the area in an around the tooth. Your dentist then drills out the decayed parts of the tooth. The hollow canals are then cleaned out and shaped to ensure there is no material remaining.
Sometimes, the tooth is then sealed on the same day. Other times, however, your dentist will put in a temporary filler to ensure bacteria and food particles don’t enter the canals and cause further infection.
Finally, gutta-percha – a filler compound – is used to fill in the canals.
After the root canal procedure, your dentist may fit a crown to prevent the tooth from cracking or breaking. A crown also looks and functions like a natural tooth.
Benefits of root canal therapy
The underlying problems that a root canal fixes, such as infection or decaying nerves, can be quite painful. Root canal therapy relieves the pain and discomfort associated with these conditions.
It also prevents the further spread of infection, and it can increase the lifespan of a tooth.
