How can a tooth become damaged?

The most common cause of tooth damage is a build-up of plaque, which is a sticky layer of bacteria that coats our teeth. In excess, plaque can attack tooth enamel and gums, leading to staining and gum disease. This usually results from a number of factors, such as poor diet, and failing to brush teeth correctly.

How can a damaged tooth be repaired or replaced?

It is fairly simple for a dentist to repair or replace a damaged tooth. Your dentist will first examine your mouth, to determine how treatable the issue is. If they believe your tooth can be saved, they will offer to fit your tooth with a dental crown. If damage is severe, and it is decided that your tooth should be extracted, your dentist will suggest replacing the tooth with a bridge.

Dental crowns sit like a cap on top of a damaged or broken tooth, with the aim of restoring the tooth’s original shape and function. They are fitted to the tooth with dental cement, and usually last between 10 and 15 years. With the right at-home care, your dental crown can easily surpass this lifespan.

Dental bridges are usually offered to patients who have had one or two teeth extracted. They are commonly formed from two crowns, which rest on the supporting teeth either side of the gap, with the false tooth or teeth between them. Bridges are permanently fixed in place, and can last up to 15 years, potentially even longer.
