Fitting Partial Dentures

in Birmingham, MI

A denture is a removable placement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues in the mouth. There are two types of dentures: complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. Partial dentures are appropriate when there are a few natural teeth still intact.

Fitting partial dentures consists of a set of replacement teeth attached to a pink-colored base to mimic the look of natural gums. A fixed bridge connects the natural teeth to crowns applied to the space of the missing tooth.

Tooth-colored fillings are more attractive because they blend in well with your natural teeth, but their other benefit is that they’re actually safer and more effective than silver fillings.

There are two options when it comes to white fillings, composite and ceramic porcelain inlays, with porcelain costing far more than composite. Porcelain fillings can cost as much as gold fillings, but they do offer major advantages.

The benefits

There are a number of benefits of partial dentures. The look of the teeth will be attractive and clean. Some partial dentures enhance the smile and fill out the facial appearance. Missing teeth are unnoticeable when using partial dentures but also look similar to the natural teeth. Partial dentures also prevent the other teeth from shifting position.

The fitting process

First, your dentist will take a series of impressions of your jaw. They will measure how your jaw relates to your teeth and how much space is between them. Next, they create models, wax forms, or plastic patterns in the exact shape and position of the denture to be made.

The patient will attempt to fit in this model several times. The denture will be assessed for color, shape, and fit before the final denture is created. Next, your dentist and team will create a final denture. Adjustments may be made as necessary.

The denture development process takes a few weeks and several appointments. Once your dentist determines what type of appliance is best for you. The team at Dr. Scott J. Owens, DDS specializes in fitting partial dentures.
