Family Dental Care

in Birmingham, MI

Excellent oral hygiene begins from the moment your child gets his first tooth and so family dental care is important to us.

Although replaced by a full adult set, baby teeth play a vital role in setting the stage for lifelong oral health. Baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth and childhood is the time to begin habits that will impact oral health for the rest of their life.

Poor oral hygiene habits can lead to rotting baby teeth that require painful removal, infections and even impact on developing speech patterns and future adult teeth placement.

Starting a routine

When the first tooth appears, it’s time to schedule your child’s first visit with the dentist so they can become accustomed and comfortable with regular family dental care visits and oral inspections. Teach your child not to fear the dentist by introducing them straight away.

The arrival of the first tooth is also the time that you should brush their teeth every day. Use a soft toothbrush suitable for their age and start a routine of brushing at least twice a day.

The right age for a child to begin to practice brushing their own teeth is between 2 to 3 years old, and you can start to consider unsupervised brushing after 8 years old.

Afraid of the dentist?

If your child is afraid of the dentist, feel assured of our family dental care experience. We enjoy working with children and offer a positive experience.

It’s normal for a child to experience fear of visiting the dentist, and almost 20% of school-aged children experience anxiety or dental phobia.

You can help reduce these fears before they reach the dental office. Avoid ambushing your child with the visit and instead tell them in advance they have a dental appointment, this allows them to prepare mentally and gives you time to encourage them to ask questions about their fears.
