Types of Dentures
There are two types of dentures, and specific processes for each type to be appropriately fitted within the mouth. The two types are:
- Partial Dentures – which are a plastic mouthpiece with replica teeth attached, sometimes including a metal framework that keeps the dentures in place. They are used when there are still some natural teeth in the mouth to conceal areas where teeth have been removed. Partial dentures can be used immediately after teeth have been extracted but will need to be adjusted throughout the healing process.
- Complete, or Full, Dentures – which are grouped into two categories – conventional and immediate. “Conventional” dentures are made after the natural teeth are removed, and the gum tissue has had a chance to heal, as opposed to the partial which can be used during the healing process. These dentures are ready for placement in about 8-12 weeks. “Immediate” dentures are made in advance and positioned immediately after the teeth are removed, similar to the partial.
Both of these denture options, partial and complete, must be properly taken care of and managed by an experienced dentist to prevent discomfort, sores, problems with speech, bacteria growth, and gum disease. Dr. Scott Owens is experienced with dentures of all kinds and can help patients choose which is best for their needs.
