Dental Implant Crown Restoration

in Northville, MI

Dental implant crowns are the perfect option for reconstructing damaged or weak teeth. Although it’s very rare, sometimes a dental crown needs replacing. The good news is dental implant crown restoration is usually more straightforward than the original crown-making process, because often only the crown, not the titanium implant, needs replacing.

When are Dental Implant Crowns Restored?

Dental implant crowns can be restored if they’re cracked or broken, have become loose, the original crown is stained and doesn’t match the adjacent teeth, or tooth decay is forming along the crown’s margins.

Sometimes crowns become loose because of osseointegration – or the fusing of the titanium implant with the jawbone – failed to occur fully. Your implant can also become loose if there is any gum disease or infection that has caused deterioration in the jawbone. It’s crucial to contact your dentist at the first sign of a loose crown or pain, swelling or redness in the gums around the crown.

How are Dental Implant Crowns Restored?

Restoration involves the removal of the old crown, which sometimes requires the crown to be cut into sections as it’s removed. Your dentist will offer a local anesthetic for any discomfort.

The procedure for making a new dental implant crown is virtually the same as when the original was custom-made. Upon removal, the implant will be cleaned and prepared for a new crown. Your dentist will temporarily fit you with an acrylic crown to wear until your new crown has been custom-made.

During the second appointment, your dentist will affix your new crown to the titanium implant. Sometimes, however, the procedure can take as many as four appointments. If the actual implant has failed, it will need to be surgically removed. The area must heal before another implant is inserted.
