Filling, Bonding, or Veneers

A minor chip can be filled or bonded. Bonding is the most common treatment used to repair a chipped tooth. Your dentist will paint a strong resin on the tooth and shape it to resemble the rest of your natural teeth. They will then use ultraviolet light to activate the chemicals in the resin and harden it.

Broken Tooth Repair

If your chipped or broken tooth happens to be in a highly visible position near the front of your mouth, your dentist may recommend a veneer instead. Veneers are thin layers of resin or porcelain that resemble the front surface of a natural tooth.

At the first appointment, your dentist will shave a small amount of enamel off your natural tooth. Then a mold will be taken and sent to a lab, where a custom veneer will be made, designed to match the rest of your natural teeth.

At your follow-up appointment, your dentist will roughen the front surface of your broken or chipped a tooth with a special liquid, before attaching your new veneer using an adhesive cement and hardening the adhesive with ultraviolet light.

Crowns and Root Canals

If you have a more substantial break or one that goes all the way down to the pulp of the tooth, you may require a root canal, a crown, or a combination of both. In root canal therapy, your dentist removes the pulp of the tooth and fills the root canal system. This is done to either treat an infection or prevent one from occurring.

Your dentist will then prepare the tooth for the crown fitting. In cases of significant damage to the natural tooth, a small post or a putty-like material may be used to create a foundation for the crown to be fitted on to.
