Dental Bonded Retainers
in Northville, MI
Having the perfect smile once your braces come off requires some maintenance to ensure your teeth stay straight. Your teeth might move around quite a bit, especially after being restrained for a long period of time, so it is important to have the right aftercare.
Dental bonded retainers are one of the methods commonly used by dentists to ensure that your teeth stay straight after your braces have done all the hard work.

What is a bonded retainer?
A bonded retainer, or fixed retainer, is a thin metal wire that is glued to the back of either the upper or lower teeth. It is held in place with cement and can be left in for several years before it needs to be removed or replaced. They can be left on permanently but may need replacing as the bonding cement could wear down, or if something happens to the wire.
Benefits of a bonded retainer
Unlike removable retainers, which require you to constantly remember to put in and take out (and are very obvious!), the bonded retainer stays in place 24/7. Because the retainers sit behind the teeth, more often the bottom teeth, they are not easy to see, and you will feel comfortable with an open-mouthed smile again.
How to care for your teeth with a bonded retainer
Because a dental bonded retainer is fixed closely to the teeth for a long time, it is very important to take extra care of the teeth where it is bonded. A toothbrush alone won’t be able to remove stubborn bits of food and bacteria.
To avoid this kind of buildup, you will need to buy the right tools like a floss threader, which will make it easier to reach all around the retainer.
