Dental Bonded Retainers
Farmington Hills, MI
Retainers are often used after the removal of braces to prevent the teeth from shifting back out of position. Even after braces put your teeth back into alignment, the teeth can still shift.

Types of Retainers
There are two main types of retainers: removable and non-removable.
Removable retainers are made of plastic or a combination of metal and plastic. They fit over the teeth and can be removed for cleaning, eating, or if they do not need to be worn all day. They have the disadvantage of being visible and sometimes being uncomfortable.
Non-removable retainers are thin wires that are bonded to the teeth with dental adhesive. These are quick and easy to put in during a normal orthodontist visit.
Advantages of Bonded Retainers
Dental bonded retainers cannot be lost since they are attached to the teeth. Removable containers can easily be lost and may be expensive to replace.
The bonded retainers are also relatively comfortable. After an adjustment period, most people do not notice them as they go about their everyday lives.
The bonded retainers are also easy to put in. Your orthodontist can put the retainer in a single office visit and it usually only takes a few minutes from start to finish.
Disadvantages of Bonded Retainers
After having the retainer put in, the tongue can get irritated for a few days as it gets used to having a wire on the back of the teeth.
The bonded retainers can make it harder to floss. Threaders are generally suggested to help get the floss under the retainers.
Consult with your orthodontist to decide if a bonded retainer is for you.
