We’re a Metal-Free Practice
Owens Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is a metal-free practice, which means we do not use gold- or silver-colored amalgams to fix imperfections. Instead, we use either composite or ceramic fillings.
Gold and silver amalgams have long been on the decline. Although durable, they have several undesirable qualities. First, they don’t match the color of your teeth, so they tend to stand out when you smile. Second, some of these amalgams may contain small amounts of mercury, which may be harmful to your health if they leach into your bloodstream.
As a metal-free practice, we also provide removal services for metal crowns and fillings. With these unsightly fillings removed, we can give you a more natural-looking smile with tooth-colored alternatives.
Composite fillings are white. When applied correctly, they look just like the natural enamel of your teeth, so they don’t appear out of place when you smile.
Composite fillings provide great durability and can last for many years before needing a touch-up. Unlike metal fillings, composite fillings chemically bind to your teeth, so they respond to the natural contraction and expansion of the tooth due to pressure or changes in temperature. This allows composite fillings to provide a better seal for cavities, cracks, and breaks against food particles and bacteria.
Although very long-lasting, composite fillings don’t provide the same durability as metal amalgams. If you’re looking for a stronger material for your teeth, a ceramic crown might be a better option for you.
Made from porcelain, ceramic crowns offer the same durability as metal amalgams, and they can sometimes even outlive metal fillings. However, unlike metal, they can exactly match the color of your teeth, so they don’t stand out when you smile.
