Tooth-colored fillings are more attractive because they blend in well with your natural teeth, but their other benefit is that they’re actually safer and more effective than silver fillings.
There are two options when it comes to white fillings, composite and ceramic porcelain inlays, with porcelain costing far more than composite. Porcelain fillings can cost as much as gold fillings, but they do offer major advantages.
Composite dental fillings
If you’re looking for affordable cosmetic fillings composite is a great choice. Made of powdered glass and acrylic resin, composite inlays are less toxic compared to amalgam which has mercury.
A further benefit of composite resin as a filling is that the material can strengthen the teeth. By comparison, silver-colored amalgam can expand and contract in the mouth in response to temperature changes which can lead to broken or cracked teeth.
The drill hole required for a composite filling is smaller than for amalgam, which also promotes a stronger tooth.
The highest standard of cosmetic dental fillings available is porcelain, and that is due to their strength. Porcelain fillings are often recommended for high force areas, for instance with rear teeth, and in cases where the cavity hole is large.
Just like composite fillings, porcelain will not weaken the tooth as it also does not expand and contract with heat exposure.
Though porcelain fillings can cost as much as four times more than composite, they offer excellent value for money and have a life expectancy of 10 to 15 or more years. Composite fillings typically need replacing every five years and so could end up costing you more over your lifetime than porcelain.
