Ceramic or Porcelain Crowns

in Birmingham, MI

Teeth that have become damaged or broken, or require large fillings, may need to be fitted with a crown. Ceramic or porcelain crowns protect the tooth, improve the tooth’s appearance and function, and extend the life of a tooth.

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap which is placed over a prepared tooth for restoration purposes. It is bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Both ceramic and porcelain crowns provide the most natural color match to the tooth, as they have the appearance of real teeth.

Why might I need a crown?

The primary reason for needing ceramic or porcelain crowns is because of a cracked tooth. If your tooth is cracked in any way, it is essential you seek immediate treatment. Bacteria can pass into the tooth through the crack, leading to infection and significant discomfort. Fitting the tooth with a crown prevents this from occurring.

You may also need a crown if you have had a filling that is substantial in size, which has resulted in a lot of the tooth cavity being removed to fill it. The missing tooth cavity can be restored in appearance and functioning by a crown.

Crowns are also used to restore a tooth after a root canal or as a prosthetic tooth in for dental implants.

How is a crown fitted?

The process of fitting ceramic or porcelain crowns is usually carried out in two separate treatments. On your first dental visit, following an appointment in which your dentist will outline the treatment to be carried out, your tooth will be shaped and prepared for the crown to be fitted. A temporary crown may be fitted following this procedure while you wait for your crown to be fabricated in a dental laboratory.

On your second treatment, your dentist will cement your crown to your tooth, in a process which usually takes about 20 minutes. Following treatment, you will be advised on how to look after your crown, including cleaning tips, to help extend its effectivity for as many years as possible.
